We receive state and federal funding so we must meet many sets of regulations to maintain our programs all of which are very important to members of the community we serve. We are currently seeking qualified employees for the following positions:

Bus Driver – for Edelman Center – Hurtsboro AL

Must have a High School Diploma/GED, current CDL, current CDL physical, Class A or B license with air brakes and School Bus Endorsement, and a clean MVR. Willing to work patiently with preschool aged children and interface with parents in a professional manner. Must be able to pass background checks such fingerprints, child abuse, and sexual abuse. Must submit to and pass pre-hire drug screening. Drivers in this area start their routes from home.

FAMILY ENGAGEMENT ADVOCATE – Responsible for outreach, intake, family assessments, maintaining and obtaining required documentation, crisis management, referrals, follow-up, and case-management for program participants of the Alabama Council on Human Relations, Inc. CENTER EDUCATOR – KING CENTER– Coordinates classroom staff, activities and services in center with assistance of Center/Health Assistant.  As Educator, implements ACHR philosophy and agency-approved curriculum.  Contributes planning and presentation of workshops, guides classroom staff towards professional growth, and supervises/evaluates classroom personnel and Center/Health Assistant. Bachelors or Master’s degree in family and child development or early childhood education; five years of child development experience. PROGRAM DIRECTOR/HOUSING DEVELOPER – Learn regulations for, monitor and supervise ACHR programs/key staff as assigned by CEO. Initially, programs include Weatherization, Child and Adult Care Feeding Program in Family Day Care Homes, VITA Program, and Airport Road Garage. Must know or learn and be able to plan ahead and act on  the regulations for AHFA (Alabama Housing Finance Authority), HOME (HOME Investment Partnerships Program), CHDO (Community Housing Development), HUD (Housing and Urban Development) LIHTC (Low Income Housing Tax Credit) as they relate to building, rehabilitating and maintaining housing complexes for persons living with low incomes. Prefer minimum of bachelor’s degree in planning or related field and minimum of two years of experience in affordable housing planning, policy or development with supervisory and management experience.  Experience in weatherization an asset. Knowledge of affordable housing, affordable housing policy, fair housing, Alabama and federal housing policies and funding programs and some knowledge of real estate development and valuation; ability to read topographic surveys and plans as well as building materials and methods and building maintenance. Ability to plan and provide accurate cost and time estimates for proposed projects. Experience working with Federal grants with compliance and timing requirements. Ability to collect and analyze data, financials, and housing plans and then make recommendations. WEATHERIZATION MANAGER, HOUSING PROJECT INSPECTOR – Accept applications from persons seeking assistance with weatherization; enter client data, assess homes per priority system for Weatherization, and prepare bid lists.  Responsible for accuracy and timeliness of all required documentation including application materials, pre and post-test results, and photos. Visit ACHR housing complexes across the state to check on their status, including completing the annual inspection checklist per AHFA regulations; assist with applications for new complexes or rehabs. Minimum of a high school diploma or GED, with three to five years of experience in carpentry, construction, contracting, home rehabilitation or related and some experience in supervision. Working knowledge of natural gas, LP Gas, fuel oil and electrical heating systems and all codes applicable to HVAC systems and installation. Extensive knowledge of local and state building codes and the proper materials and methods for building and repair projects including working with wood, concrete, etc.; some knowledge of electrical and plumbing, repair and cleaning; ability to search for information needed for a project from persons and on-line sources. Main Office Assistant/Planner – Responsibilities include grant search and writing for review, edit/proof read/revise/write agency documents (procedures, forms, correspondence etc.)  Research information, hold focus groups, tally survey data and then write the community assessment (every 3 years or as needed for grants). Assist as needed with other projects and at other area locations. Will include seeing that applicants correctly complete application forms; gather material for/filing for housing rehab projects, set up materials for board meetings, take materials to other locations for signature, etc. Guide receptionists so that they handle calls, visitors and applications consistently & appropriately. Stay in routine, close communication with supervisor and others in the agency. Must have: BA in related field; excellent writing, research and proof reading skills, excellent computer skills including in Excel and Word; good manner with others, in order to obtain information and/or convince others of program needs; reliable transportation to go among various locations, and able to travel out of the area for several days at a time to attend workshops.  EOE. 

Janitor for large child development centerDaily duties include physical work such as mopping, vacuuming, sanitizing, emptying trash, cleaning restrooms, changing filters and keeping grounds tidy and safe. Other duties include assisting with receiving supply orders and moving boxes of supplies. Must be physically able to use and move cleaning equipment, lift up to 50lbs, participate in training as assigned, follow written and verbal instructions, read and write well enough to complete cleaning or other logs and understand Material Data Sheets (MDS) regarding chemicals. Proof of Education required (No high school diploma or GED required). EOE.

Teacher — must have an ECE, HDFS (w/concentration in Infancy & Preschool), or AA in Child Development. Must have reliable transportation to visit in homes twice a year.

Teacher Assistant — must have CDA, Child Development Certificate, or AA in Child Development; will work with teacher as the second person in the classroom-supervising children, participating in all classroom activities, and working as a member of a teaching team.

Intern — must be at least 19 years old and in school to obtain CDA, CD certification, AA, or HDFS.

Bus Aide — must be at least 19 years old, with high school diploma or GED. Must be able to get on and off the bus several times each morning and afternoon. Must be able to go out the back emergency door, out the roof exit, and out the roof exit hatch and assist preschoolers in doing the same in an emergency (including carrying a child off the bus). Must be able to keep records as children enter and exit the bus, assist with harnesses, and keep order in a kind manner.

All positions require reliable attendance, good written and oral communication and computer skills; most positions require college degrees or certificates as listed.  Classroom-related positions also require good skills with children/families.

Required Documents:

Because our staff work with or near children, we must require a Criminal Background Check (CBC) (with fingerprints cleared through the ABI and FBI using DHR’s system through COGENT), clear child abuse and sex offender checks and a medical report & TB skin test on the Department of Human Resources Form.  (Cost for the CBC, Medical and TB is approximately $123.00.)

We also require proof of education (diploma – bring original & we will make a copy).  Classroom positions also may require transcript.  These items, as well as three work references, MUST be completed before selection for employment.  Some positions (Bus Driver and some maintenance/janitorial positions) require that staff drive and require a clear (or nearly) clear Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
