How Can You Help
Volunteer at one of our centers or for a special project
Volunteer Regularly at one of our centers as part of your “Second Act”
Donate Goods – items that ACHR can use itself (counts as in-kind) or distribute to Head Start/Early Head Start families or others referred who have low incomes through its Sunshine Shop (just as important).
Donate Money (including by shopping!)
Please “like” our agency Facebook page for updates and notices. You also can give us a review or recommendation. You can find the Facebook link on ACHR.com. We put pictures of some of our volunteers on line. Who knows? Next, it might be you or someone you know.
Why We Need Your Help
Federal law states that Head Start/Early Head Start grantees must generate a 20% “match” to receive grant funds to continue the programs. That is because Head Start was conceived as a benefit to the communities who had the program, and therefore something the community should help support.
We need “match” or “in-kind” to meet the requirements to keep the Head Start/Early Head Start Programs.
Our budget is always tight, we cannot pay our staff nearly what they are worth, but the match requirement is large – currently about 1.8 million each year! That amount must be documented in volunteer time, goods the program can use, and cash donations to Alabama Council on Human Relations, Inc., that can be used for Head Start/Early Head Start.
If we fail to get enough in-kind, funds granted will be reduced. Then we will have to drop the number of children served and of course lay off staff …simple as that.
Head Start and Early Head Start are worthwhile programs. We are VERY proud of some of our graduates who have become nurses, teachers, administrators – and one recently passed the bar.
We need you…please help whenever you can! Thank you!
